Studying in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering will give you a deep understanding of the impact of materials on the world and how to use that knowledge to find new ways of solving critical issues facing society.

From the study of structure and processing of materials to their manufacturing and application, the Materials Science and Engineering curriculum engages students with all areas of the field. Through coursework and research, Nuclear Engineering students will discover various applications for their degree, from power generation and homeland security to advanced nuclear materials and reactor design.

Degrees

The department offers Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, and Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Materials Science and Engineering and in Nuclear Engineering. Students interested in earning a master’s degree who aren’t on campus can participate in the online EDGE program through the Department of Materials Science & Engineering and the Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering.

Bachelor of Science Degrees

The department offers bachelor’s degrees in Materials Science and Engineering and in Nuclear Engineering. Information on ABET accreditation can be found here.

Master of Science Degrees

The Department of Materials Science & Engineering offers Master of Science degrees in Materials Science and Engineering and also in Nuclear Engineering. Both degrees have thesis and non-thesis options for students. The thesis option is for students who are interested in advanced research within a concentration of his or her choice. The non-thesis path is best suited for students pursuing professional engineering careers.

Doctor of Philosophy Degrees

The Department of Materials Science & Engineering offers Doctor of Philosophy degrees in Materials Science and Engineering and also in Nuclear Engineering. The Doctor of Philosophy degree requires completion of core coursework, oral defense of a written research proposal, independent research and a doctoral dissertation.

Dual Degrees

The Department of Materials Science & Engineering offers dual degrees for students seeking to combine their education with medicine or law.

Distance Degrees

Not on campus? That’s ok. The Gator Nation is everywhere. Through EDGE the department offers an online, non-thesis master’s program.
