Assel Aitkaliyeva, Ph.D., has been named to the American Nuclear Society’s (ANS) inaugural NuclearNews 40 Under 40 list. This recognition celebrates her as one of the most innovative young professionals advancing the field of nuclear science and engineering.
The NuclearNews 40 Under 40 list highlights leaders who are driving innovation in nuclear energy and shaping the industry’s future. Aitkaliyeva’s inclusion underscores her influence and the transformative effect of her work on nuclear technology and education.
Aitkaliyeva, an associate professor in the Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE), has earned national and international acclaim for her contributions to nuclear research, education and mentorship. Her extensive accolades include the 2022 ANS Mary Jane Oestmann Women’s Professional Achievement Award, which honors outstanding dedication and technical achievement in nuclear science and engineering, and the Department of Energy’s prestigious Early Career Award in 2018.
Aitkaliyeva’s research spans critical areas of nuclear materials and fuel behavior, and she has secured over $33 million in funding as a principal investigator or co-principal investigator during her time at UF.
“This recognition from the American Nuclear Society is a testament to Dr. Aitkaliyeva’s exceptional impact on the field,” said Michael Tonks, Ph.D., MSE interim chair. “Her work not only advances nuclear science but also inspires the next generation of engineers and researchers.”
Aitkaliyeva’s dedication to fostering a diverse and inclusive environment in STEM fields is evident in her mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students, earning her the 2022 UF Herbert Wertheim College of Engineering Doctoral Dissertation Advisor Award.
