Abstract:

Nuclear Research Program at Florida International University

This presentation will focus on the work performed at Florida International University (FIU) to establish an interdisciplinary nuclear research program bringing together over 55 FIU faculty and staff from 4 academic departments, the Applied Research Center, and the International Forensic Research Institute. This nuclear research program, in a Hispanic Serving Institution, has secured over $7M of funding over the past two years; establish a Ph.D. Radiochemistry track, a health physics specialty, develop curricula for these two tracks, recruited students for the nuclear program, and facilitated hiring of key tenure-track faculty and staff capable of performing frontier research in nuclear science at FIU.  This talk will provide examples of the research being performed in support of addressing the environmental legacy of the cold war in the areas of nuclear decontamination and decommissioning, separations chemistry, and robotics and will also delineate the training of students and postdoctoral fellows in the areas of radiochemistry, health physics, and engineering.
